This schedule gives you a idea of when you should start cleaning for Christmas while keeping it manageable.
Getting your home ready for decorations, guests, and all the festivities does not have to be stressful.
What to Do in the Weeks Leading Up to Christmas
4–6 Weeks Before Christmas (Early to Mid-November)
Declutter: Begin by going through main living areas and decluttering cupboards, drawers, and other storage spaces. This helps create room for holiday décor, gifts, and visiting guests.
Deep Clean: Tackle any areas that don’t get attention often, like behind furniture, under beds, ceiling fans, and windows. It’s also a great time to have your carpets and upholstery clearing done.
3 Weeks Before Christmas (Late November to Early December)
Decor Prep: Start cleaning areas where you’ll put up your decorations. Dust shelves, wipe down mantels, and make sure any surfaces where lights or decorations go are sparkling.
Kitchen Deep Clean: Clean the fridge, oven to prepare for holiday baking and cooking. This is especially helpful if you’ll be hosting and need extra space for groceries.
2 Weeks Before Christmas (Mid-December)
Guest Room Prep: If you have guests coming, prepare the guest room. Wash bedding, freshen up the mattress, clean the room, and stock it with essentials like fresh towels.
Touch Up High-Traffic Areas: Revisit high-traffic areas like entryways, bathrooms, and living rooms, doing a quick clean to maintain these spaces.
1 Week Before Christmas
Final Touches: Focus on kitchen and bathroom cleaning surfaces, and floors. It’s also a good time to set up any guest amenities and make sure you’re stocked on essentials (toilet paper, hand soap, etc.).
A Couple of Days Before Christmas
Quick Clean: Do a final walk-through of your home. Focus on a quick sweep, hoover, and dust to keep things fresh for Christmas Day.
