When you think of dirty items in your house, your mind might immediately jump to the bathroom or bins. However, some of the dirtiest items in your house are hiding in plain sight.

Here’s a list of everyday items that might be harboring more germs than you think and tips on how to clean them.

The dirtiest items in a house

Kitchen Sponge

Your kitchen sponge is a breeding ground for bacteria. A study found it can contain more bacteria than a toilet seat! To clean it run it through the dishwasher.

Dish Towels

Dish towels often come into contact with raw food, dirty hands, and wet surfaces, making them a hotbed for germs. Wash them frequently on a hot cycle.

Smartphones and Tablets

We take our devices everywhere, including the bathroom. Studies show they can carry more germs than a toilet handle. Wipe them down daily with a microfiber cloth and a disinfectant safe for electronics.

Remote Controls

Remotes get touched by everyone in the household, often while eating or lounging. Clean them regularly with disinfectant wipes.

Light Switches and Door Handles

These high-touch surfaces can accumulate germs quickly. Wipe them down with a disinfectant weekly, or more often if someone is ill.

Toothbrush Holder

The bathroom is a humid environment, and your toothbrush holder is often exposed to bacteria from the air and your toothbrush. Clean it in the dishwasher or by hand with hot, soapy water.

Pillows and Pillowcases

Pillows can harbor dead skin cells, sweat, and dust mites. Wash pillowcases weekly and pillows every few months.

Cutting Boards

Whether they’re used for meat, veggies, or bread, cutting boards can be a home for bacteria. Clean them thoroughly with hot soapy water and also sanitise them.

Laundry Baskets

Laundry baskets hold dirty clothes, which can contain bacteria and germs. Wipe them down with disinfectant or wash fabric liners regularly.

Pet Toys and Bowls

If you have pets, their toys and bowls can also harbor bacteria. Clean bowls daily and wash toys regularly.

While it’s impossible to eliminate all germs, regular domestic cleaning and disinfecting of these often-overlooked items can help keep your home healthier. Pay attention to high-touch and damp environments, and incorporate simple cleaning routines to reduce germs in your living space.
