How to Get Your House Clean After Decorating

Decorating your home is exciting. Fresh paint, new furniture, maybe even a few DIY projects it all looks amazing when it’s done. But once the last picture is hung and the tools are packed away, reality sets in: the mess. Dust, debris, splatters... it's like a glitter bomb of chaos.

Here’s how to tackle the post-decorating mess and get your space sparkling again:

1. Start With the Big Stuff

Before diving into the details, remove any leftover materials:

  • Empty paint cans

  • Plastic sheeting or dust sheets

  • Boxes and packaging from new decor or furniture

Clearing out the clutter makes the cleaning process less overwhelming.

2. Dust EVERYTHING

Decorating kicks up a ton of dust especially from sanding or drilling. Start from the top:

  • Ceilings and corners

  • Light fixtures

  • Walls

  • Shelves, ledges, and skirting boards

Use a microfiber cloth or duster so you’re picking it up, not just spreading it around.

3. Vacuum and Mop Like a Pro

Vacuum carpets and rugs thoroughly, even under furniture. If you have hard floors, follow up with a good mop. Post-decor dust loves to settle in the nooks and crannies.

Tip: Change or clean your vacuum filter afterward it probably worked overtime.

4. Wipe Down Surfaces

Go over all horizontal surfaces with a damp cloth:

  • Worktops

  • Tables

  • Window sills

  • Appliances

If you painted, don’t forget to check for splatters especially on switches, sockets, and floors.

5. Clean the Windows

Paint fumes and dust can leave a film on your windows. A quick glass cleaner and wipe-down can make a world of difference in letting the light back in.

6. Freshen the Air

Open windows or plug in a diffuser. Decorating can leave your home smelling like paint, sawdust, or new furniture. Airing it out helps your space feel refreshed and livable.

7. Bring Back the Comfort

Once everything’s clean, it’s time for the finishing touch: put your home back together. Lay down rugs, fluff the cushions and enjoy your newly decorated (and now spotless) space.

Post-decorating cleanup isn’t glamorous, but it’s the cherry on top of your home makeover. Put on some music, grab a coffee, and take it step-by-step.

The result? A home that looks AND feels amazing.
